Staying Connected: Mobile Data Options for India

Let’s be honest: in 2026, we’re all a little tethered to our tech.

In a country as vibrant and complex as India, having reliable data is a game-changer. Whether you’re using Google Maps to navigate a chaotic bazaar, Google Translate to decipher a menu, or simply uploading a video of the Taj Mahal to your socials, mobile data makes the journey smoother (and significantly less stressful).

While most Indian hotels offer decent Wi-Fi, you’ll definitely want a connection while you’re out exploring.

Here are your three main options for staying online:

Best Bet? If you want the most bang for your buck we recommend a physical, local SIM card. It will be much cheaper and easy to get sorted quickly on your arrival in the country.

Choosing the Right Network: SIM Providers in India

Navigating the world of Indian mobile networks can feel a bit like exploring a busy bazaar—there are several choices, and each has its own strengths.

In 2026, there are three primary operators that offer a prepaid SIM card for India specifically tailored for travellers:

While the “best” network is a matter of personal preference, for most travellers, the decision usually boils down to convenience—specifically, how quickly you can get the card activated and which provider makes the paperwork easiest for foreigners.

In the following sections, we’ll quickly break down these providers to help you identify which one offers the fastest setup and which currently holds the title for the most traveler-friendly prepaid SIM card for India.

Welcome to incredible India, by the way. Is it your first time?

VI Vodafone Idea: SIM Card for India

Vodafone Idea – or VI – is India’s largest telecom service provider, formed when Vodafone India and Idea Cellular merged.

Currently, a standard prepaid Vi SIM card is priced at 349 INR (approx. $4.15 USD).

It includes:

This makes it an ideal choice if you plan on streaming video, uploading high-resolution photos, or tethering other devices while on the go.

Reliance Jio: SIM Card for India

Reliance Jio is the second-largest network in India and is often the preferred choice for those wanting cutting-edge speed, as they have the most extensive 5G network across the country.

For 2026, Jio’s popular entry-level travel plan is priced at 299 INR (approx. $3.55 USD).

It includes:

Airtel: SIM Card for India

Airtel is the third-largest provider in India and widely considered the best option for tourists. They have refined their process specifically for international visitors, often making it the easiest SIM card to get activated quickly at major airports like Delhi or Mumbai.

For 2026, Airtel’s primary prepaid plan for travelers is priced at 349 INR (approx. $4.15 USD).

It includes:

Which Is The Best Local SIM Card for India?

When it comes to choosing a network in 2026, prices are competitive and coverage is consistent across the major players — unless you’re planning an expedition into the deepest Himalayan wilderness.

But for sheer convenience and reliability upon arrival: Airtel is the one we recommend.

The Best Local SIM for Tourists: Why Airtel Wins

Airtel is widely considered the best choice for tourists.

The reason isn’t just about the data—it’s about convenience.

Airtel has the most streamlined activation process for foreigners and a massive presence in international arrival halls. While Jio is a close second for speed, its availability at airport kiosks can be hit-or-miss, and Vi (Vodafone Idea) often requires a local Indian reference number, which can be a major hurdle if you’ve just landed.

Where to Buy Your SIM Card for India

In 2026, you have three main ways to get connected:

We got SIM Cards delivered to our hotel in Delhi for guests on our Group Trip. It made it easy for those who had not stopped at the airport arrivals to buy a SIM Card for India.

Buying a SIM Card for India at the Airport

Buying at the international airport on arrival is by far the easiest and most highly recommended option for tourists.

Arriving in Delhi or Mumbai

Both major international hubs have dedicated kiosks in the arrivals hall that operate 24/7.

Important Tip: You must pay in cash at most airport SIM kiosks. Make sure to visit an ATM in the arrivals hall before joining the queue at the Airtel booth!

Buying a SIM Card on Arrival at Delhi Airport

Be prepared: the process is a bit of a rite of passage on arrival to the country. Even with several staff members working in a tiny space, the paperwork can feel slow and laborious.

You can read all about Arriving at Delhi International Airport.

There are rarely billboards listing prices, but stay calm—it is a standard procedure.

What You’ll Need

To buy a SIM Card for India at Delhi Airport you will need:

They will photocopy your passport and in theory you need a passport photo to hand over for the SIM card application.

However, don’t fret if you do not have a passport photo. They will huff and puff. But in actual fact they can take your photo just to the side of the kiosk.

The Airtel shop desk is not large but there are at least 8 men working in the small space.

It is a notoriously laborious process. But don’t panic (this is India, remember).

The Prepaid SIM Card for India with Airtel costs 800 INR ($9.50 USD) on arrival at Delhi International Airport and includes 1.5 GB Data daily, valid for 30 Days.
That’s a lot of staff for a small network kiosk; but they due process tourist SIM cards for India day in and day out.

Buying a SIM Card From a Network Store

You can visit a network store for one of the mobile operators mentioned above to buy your SIM card for India.

We have done this before in Kolkata

However, these stores are mainly for locals buying SIM cards and setting up phone accounts and they aren’t up to speed with tourist options.

The store may ask for a local address and phone number, which as a tourist you’re unlikely to have.

The truth is that this way takes a heck of a long time and it’s more than a little bit frustrating. So it’s best to avoid this option if you can.

Buying a SIM card at an Airtel store in Kolkata was a lengthy and laborious process we don’t recommend.

Buying a SIM Card From Your Accommodation

This is always going to be a slightly more expensive option to buy a SIM card for India because the third party needs to make money too. (Though only a few dollars more).

But I love how this so fittingly matches the moniker that ‘Anything is possible in India.’

And it’s true.

It can be an absolute headache as a tourist to wait hours in a network store to process the application for a SIM Card for India.

Your accommodation provider is a more convenient option.

In the larger cities, and with budget accommodation options as opposed to huge, franchised chain hotels, they will likely be geared up to help tourists and keen to make a few rupees themselves.

Try this option only if you haven’t already tried at the airport first
A small shop like this in the back streets of Delhi is perfect for recharging data for your SIM.

Recharging and Top-Ups: SIM Card for India

While the initial tourist SIM you buy at the airport is a fantastic deal—typically giving you 1.5GB of data daily for 28 days—you might find yourself needing a little extra juice for heavy streaming or long navigation days.

In 2026, Indian data remains incredibly affordable. If you burn through your daily limit, you can buy “Data Add-ons” that sit on top of your existing plan.

Note: These prices are current for early 2026 and offer some of the best value-per-gigabyte in the world!

How to Recharge Your SIM Card for India

You don’t need to be a tech expert to top up your data.

Anywhere in India, you have two main ways to handle it:

  1. At The Shop: You’ll see small mobile shops and convenience stores everywhere. Simply walk in and say the word ‘Recharge’. They will ask for your mobile number and the amount you want to pay.
  2. The Friendly Way: If you find the Airtel Thanks app a bit finicky (it often requires an Indian credit card), don’t worry. Most hotel or guesthouse staff use specialised retailer apps that are much more efficient. You can simply give them the cash, and they can top you up in seconds.

Tip: Since recharges are so inexpensive, letting the shopkeeper or guesthouse staff ‘keep the change’ is a great, low-effort way to leave a small tip for their help!

What About eSIM Options?

It is possible to get an eSIM for India meaning you don’t even need to buy or find a physical local SIM card to put in your phone on arrival in the country.

There are options with Airalo and Holafly to get an eSIM (which you can download before you arrive) and activate it as soon as you arrive.

It is easy to top-up by credit card and ensure you always have access to data in India.

However, eSIMs in India are still not widely tested and travelled.

This means they are a pricey (pricier?) way of getting data in India.

Navigating the hustle and bustle of India is best with data for Internet connectivity at all times.
