Hiring a Campervan in New Zealand
Hiring a campervan is arguably the best way to experience New Zealand. You have the ultimate freedom to wake up to a new view every morning. Plus, whether you’re navigating the lush North Island or the South, your vehicle acts as your transport, kitchen, and bedroom all in one. It is convenient and obviously, much more cost efficient to travel New Zealand this way.
We have spent the last two years travelling all over Europe in a motorhome. We actually bought – and sold – two motorhomes over that time and drove to every country in mainland Europe! Our home on wheels there was a Fiat Ducato with some serious character
In New Zealand we have spent three months travelling all over – North and South – in a campervan and more recently in a motorhome.
It is well fair to say that we are huge fans of campervan life anywhere in the world! But New Zealand truly has it all for exploring by campervan.

Before Hiring a Campervan in New Zealand
Navigating New Zealand in a motorhome is about freedom, but it requires a little prep.
- The Cook Strait Ferry: For this New Zealand Campervan Itinerary you will be crossing from the North Island to the South Island. It is essential to pre-book your Interislander or Bluebridge ferry for your campervan, especially during peak season (December–March).
- Driving on the Left: If you’re coming from overseas, remember we drive on the left! NZ roads can be narrow and winding; always allow extra time.
- The App Factor: Download CamperMate or the thl Roadtrip app. These are lifesavers for finding dump stations, fresh water, and the campsites mentioned below.

Companies to Hire a Campervan in New Zealand
In New Zealand, the rental market is well-established, offering everything from ‘stealth’ sleepers to massive luxury motorhomes. Most companies operate out of Auckland, Christchurch, and Queenstown, making it easy to plan a one-way trip or a full loop New Zealand campervan itinerary.
Here are the main hire companies to look out for:
- Maui and Wilderness Motorhomes are the go-to choices if you want a late-model vehicle with high-end finishes, full bathrooms, and heaps of space.
- Britz, Apollo, and Star RV offer a huge range of 2 to 6-berth vans that are perfect for families.
- Jucy and Spaceships are iconic on NZ roads. They are generally smaller (much), easier to park, and much kinder to your wallet, making them popular with couples and younger travellers.
- Mad Campers and Epic Campers offer cleverly designed, smaller vans that are often self-contained, allowing you to access a wider range of campsites.

A 10-Day Auckland to Queenstown Campervan Itinerary
If you’re ready to see the very best of both islands in one go, a 10-day campervan journey from Auckland to Queenstown is the ultimate New Zealand roadtrip.
Spanning approximately 1,600km, this route takes you from Auckland, the sparkling City of Sails, through the North Island’s geothermal heartland before crossing the Cook Strait into the beautiful snow-capped peaks of the South Island.
It’s a fast-paced adventure that trades long coastal drives for stunning highlights, allowing you to wake up to the bubbling mud pools of Rotorua on Day 3 and find yourself parked beneath the Southern Alps by Day 8.
But because this itinerary covers so much ground, it’s the perfect excuse to embrace the freedom of a one-way motorhome rental. Start in Auckland – end in Queenstown – giving you the flexibility to chase the best weather as you transition from rolling Waikato farmland to the famous adventure capital, Queenstown.
Ready? 🙂

Day 1: Auckland
- Drive Time: Minimal (Local exploring)
- Where to Stay: Auckland North Shore Motel & Holiday Park
Your journey begins in Auckland. After picking up your van from the campervan depot near the airport, head toward the city. Spend your first day making the most of an introduction to Auckland.
Visit the Sky Tower for an orientation of the isthmus or wander the Viaduct Harbour for a world-class meal.
Staying at the North Shore Holiday Park allows you to be close to the city while providing an easy exit route for your southbound journey, straight onto the motorway, the following morning.

Day 2: Auckland to Rotorua
- Drive Time: 3 hours (230km)
- Where to Stay: Blue Lake TOP 10 Holiday Park (Rotorua)
Leave the urban sprawl behind as you head into the heart of the Waikato. En route, many travellers stop at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves—it is an incredible place to visit with cave trips to see the glowworms and even black water rafting tours down the river. We loved it!
As you pull into Rotorua, the scent of sulphur welcomes you to New Zealand’s geothermal capital. (:D) Spend the afternoon at Te Puia, where you can see the Pōhutu Geyser erupt and learn about traditional Māori carving and weaving.
- Top Tip: The Blue Lake TOP 10 is located just outside the city, nestled between the stunning Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) and Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake), offering a serene, forested escape.

Day 3: Rotorua to Taupō
- Drive Time: 1 hour (80km)
- Where to Stay: Taupō TOP 10 Holiday Park
The drive from Rotorua to Taupō is short but packed with highlights. Stop at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland to see the neon-green “Devil’s Bath” or the “Artist’s Palette.” It honestly is stunning.
Before reaching Taupō, pull over at Huka Falls. Here, more than 220,000 litres of water per second blast through a narrow rock canyon! It is nature’s raw power on full display.
In Taupō, take a boat or kayak out to the Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings, accessible only by water. Or go for a walk along the beautiful waterfront of the lake.

Day 4: Taupō to Wellington
- Drive Time: 5 hours (370km)
- Where to Stay: Wellington TOP 10 Holiday Park (Lower Hutt)
This is one of the longer driving days, but the scenery is legendary. You will drive along the edge of Tongariro National Park, home to three active volcanoes: Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro, and Mt Ngauruhoe (the famous Mt Doom from The Lord of the Rings!).
The road then winds through the Kapiti Coast before arriving in Wellington, the “coolest little capital in the world.”
- Tongariro Tip: If you have extra time you can make this a 12-Day New Zealand Campervan Itinerary and spend an extra two nights in to do the Tongariro Crossing. It is seriously spectacular!
- Wellington Tip: The capital city is compact and windy. Staying at the Lower Hutt TOP 10 provides a spacious place for your van with easy train access into the CBD.

Day 5: Crossing the Strait – Wellington to Nelson
- Drive Time: 3.5-hour Ferry + 2-hour drive (110km)
- Where to Stay: Nelson City TOP 10 Holiday Park
Drive your campervan onto the ferry and head up to the observation deck. The crossing through the Marlborough Sounds is often cited as one of the most beautiful ferry journeys in the world.
Upon landing in Picton, drive toward Nelson, the sunshine capital of New Zealand.
Nelson is a hub for artisans, breweries, and the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park. Spend your evening exploring the local galleries or enjoying a craft beer at a waterfront bar.

Day 6: Nelson to Punakaiki
- Drive Time: 4 hours (265km)
- Where to Stay: Punakaiki Beach Camp
Today, the landscape changes dramatically as you hit the rugged West Coast. The drive through the Buller Gorge is spectacular, with the road clinging to the cliffs above the churning river. This is the first day exploring the South Island on your New Zealand campervan itinerary.
Your destination is the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blowholes.
These 30-million-year-old limestone formations look like giant stacks of pancakes. At high tide, the sea surges through vertical blowholes, creating immense plumes of spray.
The Punakaiki Beach Camp is located right on the edge of the Paparoa National Park, offering a truly wild coastal experience.
Day 7: Punakaiki to Franz Josef
- Drive Time: 3 hours (220km)
- Where to Stay: Franz Josef TOP 10 Holiday Park
Continue south through Hokitika, the best place to pick up some Pounamu (New Zealand Greenstone). Though today, however, there are the famous New Zealand glaciers.
As you enter the Westland Tai Poutini National Park, the rainforest meets the ice. There are great paths to walk and see the viewpoints of the glaciers.
Franz Josef Glacier is one of the few places in the world where you can see a glacier surrounded by lush greenery.
- Activity: If you have the chance, book a heli-hike to stand on the ancient ice or take the forest walk to the glacier’s terminal face for a humbling perspective of nature’s scale.
Day 8: Franz Josef to Wānaka
- Drive Time: 4.5 hours (285km)
- Where to Stay: Tasman Holiday Park (Wānaka)
This is arguably the most scenic drive of the entire trip. The road south from the glaciers takes you through the Haast Pass. Make sure to stop at the Blue Pools—a short walk through native bush to bridges overlooking crystal-clear, icy-blue glacial water. It is stunning!
As you crest the pass, the rainforest disappears, replaced by the vast, dry alpine beauty of the Otago region. Drive along the shores of Lake Hawea before arriving at the picture-perfect Lake Wānaka.
Or – if you are going to do the Roys Peak Track then read about that and how incredibly stunning it is. We loved it!
- Must-See: Don’t miss “That Wānaka Tree,” a lonely willow growing out of the lake that has become a global icon for photographers. Regardless of how long your New Zealand campervan itinerary is; you need to get that pic!

Day 9: Wānaka to Queenstown
- Drive Time: 1.5 hours (70km via Crown Range)
- Where to Stay: Queenstown Lakeview Top 10 Holiday Park
The final leg of your journey involves the Crown Range Road, the highest main road in New Zealand. It offers zigzagging turns and incredible views over the Queenstown valley.
Note: Check your campervan rental agreement, as some larger motorhomes may be restricted to the slightly longer Kawarau Gorge route during winter.
Drop into the historic gold-mining town of Arrowtown for a coffee and a stroll through the restored Chinese Settlement before arriving in Queenstown.
Park up at the Lakeview Holiday Park—it is just a 5-minute walk from the town centre, meaning you can leave the van and explore on foot.

Day 10: The Grand Finale – Queenstown
- Drive Time: Minimal
- Where to Stay: Queenstown Lakeview Top 10 Holiday Park (or return your van)
You’ve made it! Queenstown is the crown jewel of the South Island. Whether you want to bungy jump at the Kawarau Bridge, take a high-speed jet boat ride on the Shotover River, or simply ride the Skyline Gondola for the best view of The Remarkables mountain range, there is no shortage of ways to celebrate your 1500km journey.
Finish your trip with the legendary Fergburger (be prepared to wait in line—it’s worth it!) and a walk along the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
Fergburger is a must-do in Queenstown!

Final Thoughts
Driving from Auckland to Queenstown in 10 days is a whirlwind of experiences. You will see the landscape evolve from the steaming geothermal vents of the north (Rotorua) to the glacial carvings of the south (Franz Josef & Punakaiki).
With a campervan, you have the ultimate flexibility to stop when the light hits a mountain just right or to linger longer over a coffee by a lake. There is so much to see in the North and South Island of New Zealand. We loved our trip and saw so much by campervan.
