Away With The Steiners

Tafraoute Hammam: A great first Moroccan Hammam experience.

Nestled in a valley in the Anti-Atlas Mountains of Morocco is the secluded oasis town of Tafraoute.  You have to drive 250km on winding mountain roads from Agadir to Tafraoute, but once you arrive too will agree it is well worth the drive.  There are plenty of accommodation options in Tafraoute if traveling by motorhome, and several hotels for travelers to the region.  And there is a fabulous hammam in Tafraoute too.

Tafraoute as a destination in Morocco seems to have it all!  And it’s not far from Agadir or Essaouira.  We have now spent more than six months travelling all over Morocco and we have really enjoyed the Moroccan hammer experience in many towns. But if this is your first experience of a Moroccan hammam then we can recommend the hammam in Tafraoute as a great experience.

Where is the hammam in Tafraoute?

There are two hammam right in the centre of Tafraoute.

How much does it cost?

Each of the hammam in Tafraoute are local hammam.  They are well established public hammams that have been set up for local use.

Unlike the many touristic spas and hammam in Marrakech, the hammam in Tafraoute is not specifically designed for tourists.  However, you will be warmly welcomed and especially the Hammam Complexe Jawharat which is well set up and used to accommodating tourists.  It is a great experience to use the local hammam (and handy if traveling Morocco by motorhome).  You will be welcomed in and shown where to go and what to do.

There are two options for the hammam.  You can scrub and wash yourself.  Or you can have an exfoliating massage and complete package by one of the hammam attendants.

The local hammam nearer to the market costs only 50 Dh for a massage.

What do you need to take with you to the hammam?

The good news is you don’t need to take much at all.  You can purchase soap and an exfoliating mitt at the small kiosk just inside the hammam in Tafraoute where you pay your entry fee. You just need to take a change of clothes and underwear and any specific toiletries you normally use when you bathe.

And you do need to take a towel.

Take with you to the hammam:

*If you have opted for the complete Beldi massage and package at Jawharat Hammam in Tafraoute you will be given a towel.

Which toiletries are available for purchase at the hammam?

The small kiosk to purchase entry to the hammam in Tafraoute also sells:

And lots of other toiletries including soaps and razors. Even a toothbrush or hairbrush!

Savon noir (black soap) and other toiletries for sale at the hammam.

What is included in the complete package at Jawharat Hammam in Tafraoute?

I opted for the complete package at Jawharat Hammam.  While I was paying before entry, I could see the lady stacking everything up from the small shop just inside.  All the accessories and soaps were put in a bucket and passed through the window to the kiosk in the female side.

And although it was too late as I had already taken my own towel in to use.  There was also a towel provided after the hammam.

Black soap and everything you need for the hammam for sale at the market.

Where can you store your personal belongings while using the hammam?

You can either take your bag into the hammam and store it behind the counter in the changing area. Or simply don’t bring valuables with you. That way you can relax and enjoy the full hammam experience.

What do you wear while using the hammam?

That is up to you.  And the most important thing is that you feel comfortable.  For the women’s side most women wear underwear.  The same in the men’s side; underwear or boxer shorts.

About the hammam in Tafraoute

This is a traditional local Moroccan hammam.  There are three hammam rooms as well as a changing room.

Get changed into your underwear and stash your belongings with the hammam attendant.  (They will put your bag behind the counter).

There are toilets just inside the door by the changing room area.

The first room is the coolest; middle is the warm room, and the third room is the hottest (sauna) room.

If you have paid for an attendant and complete package, they will guide you through the stages and direct you to sit and stand as they need you too.  You will be given a rubber mat to sit and lie on.

Enjoy your hammam

It’s a great experience anywhere in Morocco!  But we can personally recommend the local hammam in Tafraoute. Besaha!
