Review of the Hyatt Regency Amritsar: Luxury near the famous Golden Temple.

We recently stayed at the Hyatt Regency Amritsar on our most recent trip to Punjab, India. And it absolutely shaped our entire Amritsar visit!  We move around a lot in our style of travel and usually can’t wait to drop our bags and head out and explore.  But arriving in Amritsar to the Hyatt Regency was totally different.  It is the kind of accommodation and hospitality that makes it a destination in itself.

If you’ve been traveling in India or have started any research on travel planning in South Asia, you’ll know that starting the search for accommodation is a little too much like searching for a needle in a haystack.  The Hyatt Regency Amritsar is a luxurious five-star hotel located only minutes from the iconic Golden Temple.

So, if you are looking for great hospitality, a modern, clean and truly comfortable place to stay in Amritsar then the Hyatt Regency might be exactly what you are looking for.

Here is our review and (honest) experience of staying at the Hyatt Regency Amritsar

A very warm welcome to the Hyatt Regency Amritsar.

Arrival and first impressions checking in at the Hyatt Regency Amritsar

This is our fourth visit to Amritsar and for each of the first trips we arrived late at night on the train from Delhi.  But, regardless of what time of day you are checking in to the Hyatt Regency, one of the first things we noticed is that it is a great welcome to Amritsar.

On this stay we arrived in the afternoon and there is a spacious drive through arrival entrance to the hotel.  There is concierge and security here, with I might add, a fantastic grin and first impression welcome.

It was lovely to have our bags taken care of (they are scanned through the security check and were placed waiting for the concierge) and we entered to the main lobby for an Indian blessing and refreshing welcome fruit drink.  (It was July and very hot in Punjab, so this was extra-appreciated!).

The check in is a smooth experience and the staff in reception were professional and personable.  (The personable touch is also much appreciated after months of much less-personal India accommodation experiences).

Our room at the Hyatt Regency Amritsar. What are the rooms like?

We didn’t know it at the time, but the hotel has 248 rooms available!  That’s a lot of accommodation and it is all tastefully modern and very comfortable.

The rooms include Regency and Executive Suites, and each of the different room types offers pool or city views.

We have stayed in the Executive Regency Suite and the Pool View rooms and can especially recommend the suites or rooms with a pool view.  The sunset looks magnificent over the swimming pool with beautiful views of Punjab and the city of Amritsar.

The rooms are spacious and very clean.   The Regency Executive Suite has a huge king size bed in one room and a separate lounge room with a very comfortable couch, amazing views from the top floor and a fully stocked mini bar.

The bathroom is huge by hotel standards.  And, at risk of sounding far too much like a backpacker in mentioning this, the shower is outstanding.  It’s a full, walk in shower with fantastic pressure and beautifully hot water. (In India, this is always to be appreciated!).

There is also a large walk-in wardrobe in the bedroom, which again was a great treat and is worth mentioning.

All the rooms are tastefully designed with modern conveniences and everything you could expect for five-star accommodation.

Meals, in-house restaurants and our dining experience at the Punjab Province

The dining and food at the Hyatt Regency in Amritsar is absolutely a standout of our stay.  There are three restaurants on site – the Punjab Province (multi-cuisine restaurant), Scotch Haus (lounge bar with live music) and Tarteria (daytime coffee shop).

The website advertises there is something for everyone and there truly is!  Any nervous diners on a first trip to India can finally really relax and make the most of the top-notch dining.

The inhouse restaurant, the Punjab Province, has two options for the evening dinner with an a la carte menu or nightly buffet.  There is authentic local Punjabi cuisine, a full Indian menu and international classics with European grills, Italian pizza and pasta, Chinese wok-tossed rice and noodles and drinks and deserts to match.  It is delicious.

We were those who absolutely made the most of the Indian menu and after not eating much meat at all in our travels around India.  We can highly recommend the Murgh Makhani (Butter Chicken) and Lamb Rogan Josh. And the kids loved the Dahl Makhani (Butter Dahl) and both tried the kid’s menu toasted sandwich and chips and chicken nuggets and chips!

  • Tip: As well as the Punjab Province restaurant there is a Lounge Bar (Scotch Haus) and daytime coffee shop (Tarteria).  All three restaurants are located on the ground floor.

What about breakfast? Is breakfast included with accommodation at the Hyatt Regency Amritsar?

Most of the booking options on the Hyatt Regency Amritsar website and on Booking.com have the option to include breakfast in your room rate.  (And we highly recommend including it because the breakfast is epic!).

For breakfast there is a daily buffet which is officially the largest spread of breakfast we’ve seen in India. There is everything from muesli and fresh fruit, pastries galore and beautifully displayed typical Indian breakfasts too.  You can order hot toast and eggs, and waffles or pancakes from the live chef station.

And if you haven’t yet tried the famous Amritsari Kulcha this is a great place to do it.  Gavin is a new-found fan of the Kulcha (a stuffed Punjabi flatbread) and became a morning regular for this speciality breakfast.  It’s a must-try in Amritsar for sure.

As you can imagine, the food at the Hyatt Regency Amritsar is at an equally high standard to the rest of the hotel.  And in case it wasn’t obvious, we really rate both the breakfast and dinners at the Punjab Province!

What other facilities are there at the Amritsar Hyatt Regency hotel?

The hotel is amazingly set up with great facilities for relaxation and leisure.  There is an onsite Spa – Shanti Spa – a fitness centre and swimming pool.  And I best not forget to note the very much enjoyed Kids and Teen Zone that our boys appreciated.

The Kids and Teen Zone is a dedicated and comfortable space for older kids with Xboxes, beanbags and games to play.  And there is also a kid’s area for younger children and toddlers with a soft, cosy play area and baby books, crayons and colouring for that age too.

We both enjoyed a luxurious massage and spa treatment at Shanti Spa.  The spa has an extensive menu of treatment packages and different types of massage as well as a sauna and therapy rooms.  It’s luxurious and seriously relaxing!  I highly recommend treating yourself at the spa.

And finally, the laundry service.  It might not sound like much to note, but when you’ve been traveling around India for a while you come to really appreciate a great service offered like this and we absolutely made the most of it!

  • Tip: Shanti Spa is located on the First Floor and is open daily from 7am until 8pm.

What we enjoyed most about staying at the Hyatt Regency Amritsar

The location of the hotel is amazing.  And obviously we were in Amritsar to explore and check out all the sites of the city.  But the hotel makes it so comfortable, and the dinners and breakfasts are some of the best we’ve had in India that it makes it hard to leave!

We particularly enjoyed the restaurants and found it super relaxing to be able to order room service with such a high standard.  (This doesn’t feel relaxing in many places we’ve stayed in India!).  The dinner in particular was delicious, and you don’t need to look any further for somewhere else to dine while you’re in Amritsar.

And the Shanti Spa!  Many hotels around India offer massage and Ayurvedic treatments.  And we’ve braved it to try a few in places and regretted it!  The spa here is uber luxurious and really relaxing.  The staff are particularly friendly and caring to make sure you have a great experience.

The boys seriously enjoyed the swimming pool with plenty of visits during our last two days in Amritsar.  And they also rate the games room for older children with comfortable bean bags and several games to play on the large screen TV in there.

Highlights were the swimming pool and the Teen Room for these two.

Any challenges or things we didn’t like?

This is a tricky one as truly we have had a fantastic stay each time in Amritsar at the Hyatt Regency and this was our third time staying there!

Perhaps the only niggle or downside of the room itself, despite being extremely spacious with a separate living area, was that it isn’t really set up for a family with beds for more than two.

There is only one large king size bed.  And while that is extremely comfortable (especially coming off our backpacking itinerary in the rest of Rajasthan and Punjab) there wasn’t separate beds for the kids, so the boys had to sleep on the couch.  And although for them that was fine (they’re used to winging it with five years of fulltime travel and accommodation under their belt).  It might not suit families in holiday mode looking to make the most of a room set up for kids as well.

But in that case, there are adjoining rooms available, and the staff are very friendly and helpful and can set up a mattress or fold-up bed for children.

How is the hotel location?

The location of the Hyatt Regency Amritsar is very central and makes it a great choice for accommodation in Amritsar.

It is just a short drive to the Golden Temple and the centre of the old city and Heritage Walk.  Plus, it is right next door to the Nexus Mall.  The mall entrance is only 50 metres from the main lobby of the hotel.  There is a great range of shops in the mall including a pharmacy and supermarket.

Getting to Amritsar and the Hyatt Regency

Amritsar is well connected by road, rail and air.

The Hyatt Regency Amritsar is only a 30-minutes’ drive from the Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport.  And the airport services Amritsar with daily flights to Dubai, Sharjah and Kuala Lumpur as well as domestic and more destinations.

If you are already in India, it is easy to get to Amritsar directly from Delhi by fast train. And the train station is only 10 minutes from the hotel.

The verdict? Would we recommend it and why?

Absolutely we would.  We loved our stay at the Hyatt Regency Amritsar and can highly recommend it!  The service is great with friendly staff on the reception and a team of young, enthusiastic servers in the restaurant.

The daily breakfast buffet and evening dinner at the Punjab Province was a real highlight for us.  Although the boys would vote the swimming pool and games room as the highlight for them!

If you are looking for clean, comfortable and luxurious place to stay and explore the amazing city and beyond of Amritsar, we can recommend the Hyatt Regency Amritsar with confidence.

Other things to do in Amritsar during your stay

The hotel is in the heart of Amritsar and only a short drive of a few minutes to the main historic sites of the city, the Heritage Street Walk and the famous Golden Temple

Thank you to Hyatt Regency Amritsar. We were hosted for a fantastic stay, but as always, our reviews and thoughts are all our own!
