We have put together two awesome 5-Day Itinerary Options for the North Island – and this is where we are from!
So whether you are looking for subtropical island vibes in the ‘Winterless North’ (Sarah’s home) or an action-packed road trip through volcanic landscapes and glowworm caves in the beautiful Bay of Plenty and , we have you covered. Here are two distinct 5-day itineraries to help you make the most of your time in New Zealand.
Getting Around New Zealand
Before we dive into the routes, let’s talk logistics.
To truly see the North Island, you need to rent a car or a campervan. Public transport between regions (like InterCity buses) exists but won’t get you to the remote trailheads, the hidden waterfalls, or the best roadside fish-and-chip spots.
This gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace and allows you to get to some more remote locations.
- Car Rental: This is the most flexible way to travel. Most international brands are available at Auckland Airport. Remember, we drive on the left!
- Campervans: A rite of passage in NZ. It combines your transport and accommodation, though you should book campsites in advance during peak summer (December–February). Campervans in New Zealand are popular – VERY!
- Bus Travel: InterCity is the main bus company. It is reliable and connects all the major towns in these itineraries, though you’ll have less freedom to stop at scenic lookouts.
When to Go: 5-Day North Island Itinerary
These itineraries can be done all year. But do pack clothes for different temperatures at all times of the year. New Zealand is famously known for its ‘four seasons in one day’!
- Summer (Dec–Feb): High season. Perfect for swimming and hiking, but you must book everything (especially campervans) months in advance.
- Autumn (March–May): My personal favourite. Settled weather and significantly fewer crowds.
- Winter (June–August): Much colder – but nothing like European or Northern Hemisphere winters!
- Spring (Sept–Nov): Crisp, sunshine but the weather is known famously to be ‘four seasons in one day’.

These are the outlines of two totally different 5-Day North Island Itinerary options.
Option 1: Auckland & Northland
- Day 1: Auckland
- Day 2: Auckland to Paihia

PART II: 5 Day North Island Itinerary – Details
Let’s do this! Here are the links to two different 5-day North Island itinerary options.
They are each detailed with different routes, highlights, tips and suggestions for accommodation in each location.
Option 1: Northland 5-Day North Island Itinerary
Auckland > Bay of Islands > Cape Reinga > Auckland
- Start: Auckland
- End: Auckland
This route takes you into the subtropical ‘Winterless North’ of Northland. It is a region of incredible Māori history and stunning coastline.
I’m somewhat bias – but this is an awesome option for 5-days in the North Island. Northland is where I am from! I grew up in Paihia and the Bay of Islands so can recommend this slightly more off-the-beaten-track route for a short but brilliant North Island itinerary 🙂
Day 1: Auckland
Start your journey in New Zealand’s largest city. Auckland is built on a volcanic field, giving it a unique landscape of lush green cones and two beautiful harbours that give it the name ‘The City of Sails’.
It is a great starting place (and obviously where our biggest international airport is). Wander Queen Street and get a tour up the Sky Tower for epic views of the city and harbour.
- Sky Tower: For a bird’s-eye view of the city and both the Pacific and Tasman coasts.
- Mount Eden (Maungawhau): Walk up this dormant volcano for the best sunset views and a look at the impressive grassy crater.
- Viaduct Harbour: Grab dinner at one of the many waterfront restaurants.
- Stay Auckland.
Day 2: Auckland to the Bay of Islands
Drive 3.5 hours north to Paihia, the gateway to the Bay of Islands. This area consists of 144 islands and is the site of some of NZ’s most significant history.
This is where I am from!
- Waitangi Treaty Grounds: Visit the most important historic site in NZ, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. Don’t miss the high-energy Māori cultural performance.
- Explore Russell: Take the passenger ferry from Paihia to Russell. Once the ‘Hell Hole of the Pacific’ in the era of whaling in New Zealand, it is now a charming, historic village with the country’s oldest church.
- Stay Paihia.
Day 3: Bay of Islands Cruise & Opua
You can’t visit the Bay of Islands without getting on the water.
If you haven’t been to Russell yet, you can get off the ferry on the way back. It stops at the Russell Wharf and is a great chance to enjoy sunset on this side of the Bay – and get fish and chips to eat on the beach!
- Hole in the Rock Cruise: This is an iconic trip. Keep an eye out for dolphins, whales, and seals as you navigate through the famous rock archway at Piercy Island.
- Opua State Forest: If you prefer land, head to Opua for beautiful forest walks or the start of the Twin Coast Cycle Trail.
- Stay Paihia.
Day 4: Day Trip to Cape Reinga
This is a long day (roughly 6 hours return driving), but absolutely worth it. This is the northernmost point of New Zealand.
- The Meeting of the Seas: Watch the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean collide in a spectacular swirl of currents.
- Te Rerenga Wairua: In Māori mythology, this is where spirits leap off the land to return to their ancestral home.
- 90 Mile Beach: If you take a guided tour, you’ll drive along the sand and go sandboarding on the giant Te Paki dunes.
- Stay Paihia.
Day 5: Return to Auckland
The drive back is about 3 hours.
- Option A: Spend the morning in Kerikeri. Visit the Stone Store (NZ’s oldest building) and Rainbow Falls before driving south.
- Option B: Head straight back to Auckland to explore the Auckland Domain and the Museum for a deeper dive into Pacific history.
Option 2: Auckland to Wellington 5-Day North Island Itinerary
Auckland > Waitomo > Rotorua > Taupō > Wellington
This route is a classic road trip through the centre of the North Island, featuring caves, volcanoes, and geothermal wonders.
- Start: Auckland
- End: Wellington
Day 1: Auckland to Waitomo
Head south to Waitomo (200km, 2.5 hours). Try the amazing Black Water Rafting and see the stunning Waitomo Glowworm Caves.
We did both the Ruakuri Cave Tour and Black Water Rafting at the and highly recommend!
- Waitomo Glowworm Caves: This is the most popular choice for a quick visit. These tours run all day, lasting 45-60 minutes, and include a silent boat ride under a ‘galaxy’ of glowworms. Note that photography is not allowed here.
- Ruakuri Cave: Located just down the road, this 1.5-hour guided tour is spectacular. Photography is permitted here, though it’s a challenge in the near-darkness! We did this tour and highly recommend it for the incredible formations and spiral entrance.
- Black Water Rafting: For the ultimate adventure, try floating through the cave systems on an inner tube. Harry and Gavin did this and absolutely loved the thrill of navigating the underground rivers.
- Stay: Stay at the Waitomo Caves Homestead.
Day 2: Rotorua
A 2-hour drive brings you to the heart of NZ’s geothermal activity. You’ll smell the sulfur as soon as you arrive!
Rotorua is most famous for its rich Māori culture as well as the chance to experience some of New Zealand’s famous adventure activities. As well as being famed for its incredible geothermal wonders.
- Te Puia: See the famous Pōhutu Geyser and learn about traditional Māori carving and weaving.
- Redwoods Treewalk: Walk across suspension bridges high above the forest floor in a grove of giant Californian Redwoods. We love this adventure in Rotorua!
- Wai-O-Tapu: Drive slightly south to see the “Champagne Pool” and the neon-green “Devil’s Bath.”
- Polynesian Spa: Relax in natural acidic and alkaline hot mineral springs overlooking Lake Rotorua. Seriously good after a few solid travel days.
- Stay Rotorua.
Day 3: Taupō
Just an hour south of Rotorua is Lake Taupō, a massive crater lake – the size of Singapore!
- Huka Falls: Witness the incredible power of the Waikato River as it is forced through a narrow chasm. This is a cool stop to view without having to hike or walk to see.
- Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings: Take a boat or kayak to see these massive carvings only accessible from the water.
- Stay: Taupō.
Day 4: The Desert Road to Wellington
This is a long, scenic 4.5-hour drive. You’ll pass through the Tongariro National Park, home to the three massive volcanoes: Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe (Mt. Doom), and Tongariro.
- Mount Victoria Lookout: Upon arriving in Wellington, head straight up for a 360-degree view of the harbour and the “Coolest Little Capital.”
- Cuba Street: Explore the quirky heart of the city, famous for its bucket fountain, vintage shops, and incredible coffee.
- Stay Wellington.
Day 5: Wellington
Spend your final day soaking up the culture of the windy city.
- Te Papa: The National Museum of New Zealand. It is interactive, free, and world-class.
- Wētā Workshop: A must for movie buffs to see how the props and costumes for The Lord of the Rings and Avatar were made.
- Wellington Cable Car: Take a ride from Lambton Quay up to the Botanic Gardens.
New Zealand Culture & Food
There are a few things you really do need to know – and that you need to try – when you visit New Zealand.
The Culture
Māori culture (Te Ao Māori) is central to life in the North Island. You will see it in the language (Te Reo), the place names, and the customs.
- Te Tiriti o Waitangi: The Treaty of Waitangi is New Zealand’s founding document. There is a great introduction to Māori culture and history at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands.
- Language: Take the time to learn a few words of Te Reo Māori. Kia Ora (Hello), Kai (Food), and Aotearoa (Land of the Long White Cloud) are great places to start.
- Māori Heritage: The North Island is the best place to experience Māori culture. In Rotorua and Northland, you will find Marae (meeting houses) and can learn about Tikanga (customs).
- The Hangi: A traditional way of cooking food in an earth oven using hot stones. The smoky, earthy flavour is incredible. If you get the chance to try it – you are in luck!
The Food
New Zealand is a paradise for foodies. Make sure to try:
- Meat Pies: The quintessential Kiwi lunch. Grab a Mince and Cheese pie from a local bakery.
- Fish and Chips: Best enjoyed on the beach at sunset. Russell and Paihia are great spots to do this!
- Pavlova: A meringue-based dessert topped with cream and fruit (yes, we still claim it over Australia!).
- Lamb: World-renowned for a reason. Try it roasted with rosemary and garlic.

- Freedom Camping: New Zealand has strict rules about where you can park overnight. Use apps like CamperMateor Rankers to find legal spots. Always leave no trace.
- Connectivity: Buy a local SIM card (Spark or One NZ). Mobile signal can be patchy in remote areas like Cape Reinga or the Tongariro National Park, so download your maps for offline use.
- Check the Weather: New Zealand weather is famously “four seasons in one day.” Even in summer, bring a rain jacket and a warm fleece.
- Sun Protection: The NZ sun is incredibly harsh due to a thin ozone layer. Wear a hat and high-SPF sunscreen even on cloudy days.
