The markets in Morocco are always a great way to experience local culture and to get a feel for the diversity of each region. Anza Souk is a large weekly market with farmers and vendors coming from Agadir as well as the surrounding valleys of Tamraght, Aourir and Taghazout and beyond.
The Souss-Massa region of Morocco is popular for tourism due to its beaches and surf vibes. A visit to Anza Souk is a great addition to your Agadir-Taghazout itinerary.
Where is the weekly Anza Souk?
Souq Anza is the main weekly market in Anza not far from Agadir.
The weekly market is located just off the main highway from Agadir to Aourir (and much further north – all the way to Tamraght, Taghazout and Essaouira).
It’s easy to spot the market. It is surrounded by a large wall and on the opposite side of the road to the ocean. The market sprawls up the hillside with views down to the sea.
- Agadir to Anza Souk: 11 mins (8.1 km) via Rte d’Essaouira
- Tamraght to Anza Souk: 14 mins (8.7 km) via N1
- Taghazout to Anza Souk: 20 mins (16.2 km) via N1
When is Anza Souk?
The weekly Anza Souk is held every Wednesday from 8am.
There are a number of other weekly regional markets in the area:
- Tamraght: Tuesday
- Aourir: Wednesday
- Anza: Wednesday
- Agadir: Sunday (although now one of Morocco’s largest souks this runs every day and has over 6000 vendors!).
The best time to visit is mid-late morning until about midday when the market is bustling and at its best. But you don’t need to miss breakfast to make it to Anza. The market is still going into the early afternoon although the produce may be dwindling. It will be open for the day until the vegetables are sold!
Visiting Anza Souk
There is everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to seafood, meat, livestock, and poultry. There are rows and rows of stalls selling new and secondhand clothes and homewares. As soon as you enter you will smell fresh popcorn and other snack foods from the small trolleys moving through the market. And you can quite literally get yourself lost in the alleyways of trinkets, treasures and brick-a-brack on your way up to the view from beneath the iconic sea of souk umbrellas.
How long do you need to visit the souk?
Allow 45 minutes to an hour to wander and take it all in at Anza. There are a couple of small coffee stands and kiosks selling sardines and basic omelet and tea. But they are only small pop-up style tea shops so it’s not a lunch outing kind of destination. Each time we have visited the market we spend around an hour wandering all through the market. It has a spectacular view over the ocean from the top level of produce sales.
And without question one of the highlights of a visit to Anza Souk is the sugarcane juice stand just outside the entrance before heading off.
Cash only
The weekly market in Anza is cash only. It is also worth noting there are no ATMs in Anza either. For the neighbouring villages of Tamraght, Taghazout, and Aourir there are ATM’s now in Tamraght (at Afriqia Service Station) and in Banana Village in Aourir to get cash out. Otherwise, there are plenty of ATM’s in Agadir.
How to get to Anza Souk from Agadir or Taghazout
Anza Souk is a 15-minute drive from Agadir (9km). The beachfront villages of Anza, Tamraght, Aourir and Taghazout are well connected with Agadir by buses and taxis.
It’s easy to wave down a shared taxi and jump in for 10Dh (1 EUR). There is a taxi stand on the main road and bus stops just below Anza Souk.
Where to park
If you are self-driving in Morocco that makes visiting the weekly souk in Anza even easier. There is lots of parking off the main highway just outside the entrance to the souk in a large, designated carpark.

We can’t rate the weekly markets in Morocco highly enough! It is a fascinating way to get a glimpse of traditional, rural and weekly life in Morocco. And obviously a good place to stock up on fruit and vegetables or souvenirs and handicrafts.
