Tucked in between the better-known bustling town of Aourir (Banana Village) and the tourist town of Taghazout is the vibrant village of Tamraght, Morocco.

Albeit smaller and slower than its neighbours, Tamraght is a quaint village with a unique relaxed surf-town vibe overlooking the Atlantic coastline. It appeals to travelers coming for an extended stay to surf with a more local pace of life. And a big part of the weekly connection of village life is the weekly souk in Tamraght.

The village is perched up on the hillside and connected by a maze of small roads and narrow steps and pathways.

But it’s worth navigating the alleys beneath the bright bougainvillea to find your way to the bustling once weekly Tamraght Souk.

The weekly souk in Tamraght is a typical local Moroccan market.

If you are staying the Taghazout and Tamraght area to surf and your accommodation is self-catering, then the weekly market in Tamraght is a great place to stock up on fresh produce, fruit and vegetables and anything essential from a small Moroccan market.

And if you are visiting Taghazout region and wondering what things to do in Tamrahgt, for sure a wander up from the beach to the weekly souk is a great way to get a glimpse into local life in Morocco.

Where is the weekly Tamraght souk? 

There are two main streets that make up the centre of Tamraght, Morocco.

The small weekly Tamraght souk is in the centre of the village on top of the hillside.

With the two minarets from the mosques as your landmark from down at beach level, it’s a short walk up the narrow steps and pathways to the main mosque where you will find the bustling weekly souk in Tamraght. 

When is the weekly Tamraght souk? 

The weekly market in Tamraght is held every Tuesday from 8am. 

There are a number of weekly regional markets in the area: 

  • Tamraght Souk: Tuesday 
  • Aourir Market: Wednesday 
  • Anza Souk: Wednesday 
  • Agadir Souk El Had: Sunday (although now one of Morocco’s largest souks this runs every day and has over 6000 vendors!).  

The best time to visit is mid-late morning when the market is bustling and at its best. But you don’t need to miss breakfast to race up the hill.

The market is still going into the early afternoon although the produce may be dwindling.

You won’t be the only visitor. It is one of the popular things to do in Tamraght, Morocco.

Visiting Tamraght souk 

It’s not a huge market by Moroccan standards.

It covers the square in front of the mosque and sprawls out the surrounding small streets. But the atmosphere is friendly and although it is a local market it is typically less conservative than other Moroccan souks and it does receive a number of tourists and visitors every week in Tamraght.

There is plenty to see and a beautiful produce and fresh fruit to buy.

How long do you need to visit the weekly Tamraght souk? 

Allow 40 minutes to an hour to walk up and wander the small weekly market in Tamraght.

There are a couple of small tea shops and cafes at the top on the main street as well as a delicious bakery selling croissants and pastries.

Cash only 

The weekly market in Tamraght is cash only.

There are now two ATM’s in Tamraght. One at the Afriquia Service Station and one near the campsite in Tamraght.

For the neighbouring village of Taghazout, Tamraght and Banana Village in Aourir are the closest places to get out cash).

How to get to Tamraght from Agadir or Taghazout

Tamraght is 25 minute’s drive from Agadir. The beachfront villages of Tamraght, Aourir and Taghazout are well connected by buses and taxis.

It’s easy to wave down a shared taxi and jump in for 10Dh (1 EUR). There is also the #32 ALSA Surf Bus running from Agadir to Taghazhout several times an hour.

And coming from Taghazout to Tamraght for the weekly souk there is a new six-kilometer bike path along the beach that can be walked, biked, or skated! 

Where to park in Tamraght 

If you are self driving in Morocco that makes visiting the weekly souk in Tamraght even easier.

There is lots of parking on the main highway near the large Afriquia service station.
