For tourists exploring the GCC region, crossing this border is a thrilling and unique experience, offering a literal bridge between two very different Middle Eastern cultures.

The crossing, however, is not a typical land border. It’s a logistical challenge, an architectural marvel, and sometimes, a patience game. If you’re planning to make the leap from the glittering streets of Manama to the burgeoning Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, ditch the rental car and embrace the most reliable method: the border taxi.

Our Experience: Crossing the Border Bahrain to Saudi Arabia

Honestly? We had a smooth and awesome experience crossing from Bahrain to Saudi Arabia!

I think that coming from an island country (New Zealand) we always find any land border crossing fascinating. Which, despite Bahrain technically being an island itself and making the crossing by causeway, this border crossing from Bahrain to Saudi Arabia is a great experience of modern travel – and just exciting overall! 

We left early in the morning from Manama and arrived mid-afternoon to Dammam. We had a fantastic dinner out in Dammam at the Heritage Village, and it started off the beginning of a fantastic month of travel in Saudi Arabia!

The Logistics: Taking a Taxi Bahrain to Saudi Arabia

When tackling the Bahrain to Saudi Arabia Border Crossing, you quickly realize the causeway wasn’t designed for casual foot traffic or tourist buses; it was built for commuter traffic and freight.

• No Pedestrian Access: You absolutely cannot walk across the Causeway.
• Rental Car Restrictions: Most rental car companies in Bahrain will not allow their vehicles to cross into Saudi Arabia due to insurance and registration complexities. Even if they do, the paperwork required can take days to process.
• The Border Taxi Solution: Your best bet is to use the dedicated Saudi border taxis. These are specific vehicles (usually large sedans or SUVs) licensed to operate the full route, including waiting in line at the two main checkpoints. You can find them stationed at the Bahrain side of the causeway, especially at key hotels or taxi ranks in Manama.

We organised our taxi through our hotel in Bahrain and it turned out to be a great experience with a friendly driver who took us all the way. Highly recommend! 

Cost Insight:

Expect to pay a fixed fee for the full journey, typically around 20-30 Bahraini Dinars (or the equivalent in Saudi Riyals) for the taxi that covers the toll and the ride to your final destination in Khobar or Dammam. Always agree on the final price before you start the journey.

Part One: The King Fahd Causeway from Bahrain to KSA

The journey itself is spectacular.

The King Fahd Causeway is an engineering marvel that opened in 1986, comprising multiple bridges and embankments.

Your ride begins on the Bahrain side, usually with a quick payment of the causeway toll. We had organised a taxi driver from our hotel in Bahrain and had organised a morning pick up to take us all the way from Bahrain to KSA. 

From there – at the causeway toll – you are quickly suspended over the turquoise waters of the Gulf. The first half of the journey is relatively quick and scenic, offering views of the small islands and shipping lanes.

The journey culminates at the Border Island—a man-made island halfway across the Gulf. This island is known as Passport Island and houses the actual customs, immigration halls, and duty-free shops (in case you need a final supply run before the Kingdom). This is where the queuing begins.

Part Two: Exiting Bahrain – The Island Checkpoint

The customs process involves two stops on the Border Island: one for Bahraini exit procedures and one for Saudi entry procedures. Your driver will navigate the lanes, which are often separated for Bahraini citizens, GCC residents, and visitors.

• Lane Selection is Crucial: Your taxi driver knows the ropes. Trust them to select the correct lane, which might be a dedicated lane for taxis or a general visitor lane. This choice can drastically affect your wait time.
• The Bahrain Exit: Once you reach the first window, you will present your passport to the Bahraini immigration officer.
• The Stamp: They will quickly verify your status and place the exit stamp in your passport.
• The Vehicle Check: There is minimal vehicle inspection on the Bahrain side.

The Wait Time Variable

This is the most unpredictable part of the journey. During peak travel periods—especially Thursday afternoons or Saturday evenings when Gulf citizens are traveling for weekend breaks—the wait to get through both sides can easily stretch to three or more hours. 

For the smoothest crossing, aim for a weekday morning (Sunday through Wednesday). 

Part Three: Entering Saudi Arabia – The Welcome to the Kingdom

After clearing the Bahraini side, your taxi will move immediately to the Saudi immigration checkpoint, which is situated on the other half of the Border Island. This is the crucial stage where preparation pays off.

• The E-Visa Mandate: It is absolutely paramount that you have your Saudi Tourist E-Visa printed or readily available on your phone. Do not attempt this crossing without an approved visa. While Saudi Arabia offers a visa-on-arrival option at its airports, it is not reliable or guaranteed at the land border for international tourists. The E-Visa is mandatory for seamless entry.

• The Immigration Process: You will hand your passport and E-Visa printout to the Saudi immigration officer. They will scan your passport, verify your visa electronically, and usually take a quick biometric photo. The process is professional and efficient, provided your documentation is in order.

• Customs Check: Following immigration, your taxi will proceed to a simple customs area. In the past, this involved a brief inspection of luggage but checks for personal vehicles and taxis are often fast. Be aware of all Saudi customs laws, especially regarding alcohol, religious materials, and drone equipment, which are strictly prohibited.

• Final Verification: After customs, there is one final checkpoint where officers verify the car’s documents and count the passengers before waving you onto the main causeway road leading to the mainland.

The moment you pass this final barrier; you have successfully entered the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Final Stretch: Getting to Khobar or Dammam

Once you leave the Border Island, the final leg of the drive is short, smooth, and fast. The road connects directly to the Eastern Province’s network, and your taxi driver will take you straight to your pre-agreed destination, typically:

• Khobar: The most common destination for tourists, known for its beautiful Corniche and close proximity to the Causeway.
• Dammam: The larger administrative and industrial center of the region.

Arrival in KSA

If you are staying in the Eastern Province, Khobar is the more tourist-friendly city with excellent hotels and dining options, especially along the waterfront. Ensure your driver knows the exact name and address of your hotel, as not all addresses are easily found on traditional maps.

We headed straight for Dammam from the border crossing.

There we checked into our hotel and headed out for dinner (by the time we had arrived) at the Dammam Heritage Village. 

Essential Preparation: Time, Cost, and Visas

To ensure your charter taxi journey is as smooth as possible, follow this checklist:

1. Secure Your Visa: Apply for and print your Saudi Tourist E-Visa at least a week before your trip. This is your single most important piece of documentation.
2. Optimal Timing: Travel between Monday and Thursday morning. Avoid Thursday afternoons, Friday, and all-day Saturday to bypass the bulk of weekend leisure traffic.
3. Currency: Carry some Saudi Riyals (SAR). While many places accept cards, having cash for the taxi, small snacks, or unexpected fees is essential.
4. Agree on Price: Confirm the total taxi fare with the driver before the journey begins. Ensure this price includes all tolls and the drop-off at your specific hotel in Khobar or Dammam.
