Hammam Aourir is a great, traditional Moroccan hammam experience.

A hammam is a traditional Moroccan bath. These public bathhouses are where the authentic Moroccan Hammam experience lies!

Often compared with a Turkish bath, it is similar but without the steam. In Morocco, hammam are used by men, women, and children for regular weekly bathing and the whole hammam experience forms part of an age-old tradition.

Where can you store your personal belongings while using the hammam?

You can either take your bag into the hammam and store it behind the counter in the changing area. Or simply don’t bring valuables with you. That way you can relax and enjoy the full hammam experience.

What do you wear to the hammam in Morocco?

This is always a topical question. What do you wear to a Moroccan hammam?

Ultimately, it is up to you. And the most important thing is that you feel comfortable. For the women’s side most women wear underwear only.

You could in theory wear a bikini top if you were not comfortable going topless. But it would make it harder to exfoliate yourself or for the hammam attendant. Most women wear their underwear bottoms. Some women wear nothing at all.

And the same in the men’s side. Most men wear underwear or boxer shorts.

Hammam Aourir – about the experience

Hammam Aourir is a typical local Moroccan hammam.  The set-up is separated for men and women.  You will spot the blue sign on the outside of the building and see the two signposted entrances for male and female.

Inside, the hammam consists of three main rooms – warm, warmer, and hot.  Plus, a changing room and reception inside the female or male area where you can store your belongings while you bathe.

Different ways of hammam

Hammam-goers all have their own way of performing their hammam ritual.  But the process of what to do at a Moroccan hammam is generally the same and follows a similar pattern.

There are two options on entering any hammam in Morocco;

The massage/exfoliation and scrub by a hammam attendant is the real deal. And this is what I recommend for your hammam experience in Morocco!

Albeit I often do wonder how many Moroccan hammam I have to visit before I feel truly as comfortable as a local. But already after more than six months traveling in Morocco I know I am going to miss the hammam experience when I leave.

About the Moroccan Hammam ritual in Aourir

To summarise the (likely) order of bathing at the Aourir hammam:

  1. Find your hammam space. Rinse out your area. (If you have requested a hammam attendant she will first cleanse your chosen area of the floor with the first bucket of hot water).
  2. Rinse. Rinse yourself with clear, hot water. Moroccans use this stage of rinsing with hot water to bring themselves to a sweat and open the skin pores.
  3. Black soap. Take the Savon noir and rub a layer of the olive soap all over your body.
  4. Scrub. Albeit after a short pause while you or your attendant fills the next two buckets of hot water and your skin becomes ready to scrub.  Take the kess (scrubbing mitt) and scrub yourself with long hard strokes until the dead skin loosens and begins to roll off. (Sounds gross right? It is. But keep reading and definitely try the hammam in Aourir as you are guaranteed to leave cleaner than you have ever felt before!).  Exfoliate each area of your body and rinse the area straight afterwards.
  5. Soap. Take the rest of the black soap and rub the soap again all over your body.
  6. Rinse. This stage is a short rinse but wash off the black soap and any remaining exfoliation.
  7. Shampoo. Wash your hair.
  8. Rinse. The final rinse.

You are ready to leave.  Get changed and seriously marvel at how clean you feel! The hammam experience is unlike anything else. And you are guaranteed to leave feeling fresher and cleaner than you have ever felt before!

How to get to Aourir Hammam and where to park

Aourir is a village and valley community near Agadir, Morocco. The village of Aourir is often more famously known as ‘Banana Village’ and is a popular destination for surfers flocking to Banana Beach.

The hammam in Aourir is centrally located and within public transport to get to from Taghazout and Tamraght or Agadir.

If you have a car in Morocco and are driving yourself, there is parking on the road front outside the hammam. Or within the close vicinity of the hammam there is also off-road parking. (We managed to park our camper van just a two minute walk from the hammam in Aourir which was very handy!).

From Agadir it is straightforward to take a bus to Aourir or you can flag down a shared taxi for 10Dh.

Spot the blue ‘Hammam’ sign to the left as you head up the valley in Aourir.

Enjoy the Moroccan hammam experience

Hammam Aourir is another of Morocco’s typical and traditional Moroccan hammams.  And even now; two days later I still feel unbelievably refreshed and very thankful to the amazing hammam attendants in Aourir for a great experience!
