Is there a Moroccan hammam in Zagora? Everything you wanted to ask…

Yes! And not only is there one fantastic hammam in Zagora.  But actually, there is more than one.  So get ready to feel cleaner than you have ever felt before…

Here is everything you need to know for a great hammam experience in the beautiful palm oasis desert town of Zagora.

Where is the hammam in Zagora?

There are three main hammam in Zagora.  Each of the hammams are situated close to the mosque in that area.

Right in the centre of town by the central mosque (Mosquee Mohammed VI) the hammam is located just out the back.  The first sign you will see is the blue sign on the door for the ladies hammam; ‘Femmes’.

And around the back of the same building is the familiar blue sign written in Arabic and French; ‘Hommes’.

We stayed in our motorhome in Camping Sindibad; a simple campsite within walking distance of everything in Zagora.  And after visiting the hammam in the centre of town we discovered there is actually a second hammam just 100m from the campsite. (Opposite the large square).

Each of the hammam in Zagora are local hammam. They are well established public hammams that have been set up for local use. Unlike the many touristic spas and hammam in Marrakech, the hammam in Zagora is not specifically designed for tourists. However, you will be warmly welcomed!

It is a great experience to use the local hammam (and handy if traveling Morocco by motorhome or just back from the desert). You will welcomed in and shown where to go and what to do.

There are two options for the hammam.  You can scrub and wash yourself.  Or you can have an exfoliating massage by one of the hammam attendants.

  • Hammam (entry): 10-15 Dh (1 – 1.50 EUR)
  • Exfoliating massage: 50 Dh (5 EUR)

You need to first pay for entry to the hammam (10 or 15 Dh depending on which hammam in Zagora) at the small kiosk outside.

Then if you have opted for a massage (technically an exfoliating scrub; but most commonly translated as massage) you can pay the additional 50Dh to the hammam attendant inside the changing room reception area. This area is separated for men and women.

About the process; using the hammam in Zagora

This is a traditional local Moroccan hammam.  There are three hammam rooms as well as a changing room.

Get changed into your underwear and stash your belongings with the hammam attendant.  (They will put your bag behind the counter).

There are toilets by the changing room area.

The first room is the coolest; middle is the warm room, and the third room is the hottest (sauna) room.

If you have paid for an attendant, they will guide you through the stages and direct you to sit and stand as they need you too.
