This isn’t to be a long blog about HOW to visit Legoland Billund. (There are plenty of those). But more specifically, we wanted to know before we went, a few tips for visiting Legoland Billund on a budget. And, how to visit Legoland Billund with a motorhome.
About the Gift of Adventure
If you’ve been following us for a while, you know we’ve been traveling the world – backpacking with our kids – for more than five years fulltime now! (That always sounds crazy to say it out loud). But before we left for fulltime travel, we changed a few things about how we live. And one of those was about prioritizing adventures and memories over material items (and gifts).
And so, we opted for adventures over gifts.
Each birthday we gift our boys (and ourselves if it’s our birthday!) an “Adventure”. It doesn’t have to be something huge or extravagant. And whereas a toy or material gift can blur into the next and we don’t always remember what we are given.
The idea of gifting an ‘Adventure’ is that it will be something they will look back on and remember.
And we have had some adventures to remember! Harry has been fishing in Thailand; ridden a train from one side of India to the other. And been for a scenic flight from Rarotonga to the lesser-known outer islands of the Cook Islands. Oscar has been snorkeling in the Philippines, swimming with turtles in the Pacific and one year had an ice cream party in Morocco! We all have a lot of birthday adventures to remember and treasure.
This year both boys had a special plan for their birthday adventures, and both dreamed of visiting Legoland in the home of Lego, in Denmark.
So, this is our birthday adventure to Legoland Billund, by motorhome!
Where to stay the night before visiting Legoland Billund with a motorhome.
I am writing now from our second night staying close to Legoland Billund with a motorhome and we really have been lucky to find a great free parking spot. It took us 10 minutes this morning to drive to Legoland (and park at Legoland for free with our motorhome!).
There are a few good options around Legoland Billund on Park4Night app. And obviously there are many paid options, and some great campsites really close to Legoland. (We drove past them this morning). But if you are looking for a free place to park up the night before visiting Legoland you are in luck.

So, check it out and do a little bit of research to check what suits you.
And obviously it goes without saying to look after the beautiful forestry and nature around this region of Denmark. It is truly a privilege to find such beautiful places to park for the night and to call home. And imagine finding such a beautiful place just close to Legoland to park your motorhome for the night!
How much does it cost for daytime parking AT Legoland Billund with a motorhome?
There are six main carparks at Legoland Billund. And as soon as you purchase your ticket for Legoland online before visiting; the last question it asks before you pay is whether you want to pre-purchase parking. (I almost did this!).
Fortunately, I didn’t press purchase on the parking. (We had planned to arrive early and check out the options).
Which was just as well because it turns out it cost 60 Kr (about $9 USD) for day parking whether you pre-purchase the parking or not.
But, visiting Legoland Billund with a motorhome means there is another option…
Parking at Legoland Billund for FREE – with your motorhome.
In fact, there are some of the first parking lots at Legoland Billund that you can’t park in your motorhome. The parking spaces are too small, and there are signs that forbid parking in these parking lots with a motorhome or caravan. (We checked out parking P1 and P2 and both have a sign forbidding campervans and caravans).
But there is a better option!
- Tip: Check out P6; Parking Lot Number 6. This is free day parking.
It is only a short walk to the entrance of Legoland. And the best thing about visiting Legoland Billund by motorhome is that you can arrive early and make your breakfast or a cup of tea while you wait for Legoland to open.
- Tip: Legoland Billund opens at 10:00am.
We arrived for parking at Legoland with our motorhome at around 8:30am. (You don’t need to be there crazy early. We were only the second campervan in the parking lot!).
A couple of questions about Legoland Billund with a motorhome (and especially if you are doing it on a budget).
The parking at Legoland Billund with a motorhome was really the biggest question we had. There are heaps of mainstream FAQ on the Legoland website and it does give some great details. But there is one question about what to bring that we realized it didn’t answer…
Are there water fountains at Legoland? Or water refill stations?
No. There aren’t. You need to bring your water bottle with you and carry enough for your family. Or your other option is to buy water at Legoland!
I thought this was hard to believe and I actually asked one of the staff on the gate as we left as I thought surely, we must have overlooked the water fountains. But he confirmed, there are no drinking water fountains or water-bottle refill stations at Legoland Billund.
Now I confess I had high expectations (assumptions?) of a theme park in Scandinavia. I assumed that of course there would be water refill stations at Legoland. There are all over Europe.
But I was wrong there.
I could go on about this for a long time. But there is no point. There is no place to refill your water bottle at Legoland. So, it’s up to you how prepared and organized you are for your Legoland visit. But at least you have a heads up; bring your water bottle!
How long do you need at Legoland Billund?
Greetings tired parents; it does take a long time and as you may have heard the queues for the rides are long.
When we first arrived at the park (at 9:40am) we joined the mass queue of fast-moving crowd outside that passed through the ticket scanners at 10:00am (on the dot). We walked straight past the first shops and rides immediately by the entrance and went right to the Vikings Splash Water Ride. This was a good move as we basically walked right on in and went on the ride. There was no queue.
The next ride we went on was the Adventure Cars. We had a short 10-minute queue for that. (Believe me, that will feel like no wait at all).
But by the time we finished the first two and headed to find one of the next roller coasters; the queues and waiting time were up to 60 minutes (and some 75 minutes) for some of the rides!
- Tip: Recommended time allowance for visiting Legoland is 6-8 hours.
And yes, you will be tired. (The kids obviously won’t be). But it’s a great day out for a family! It’s the evening of our visit and we are tired but buzzing. It was the best feeling to see the excitement on the kids’ faces ALL day long. (And go on; we both really enjoyed it too!).
Visiting Legoland Billund by motorhome. The verdict?
The best thing about visiting Legoland Billund with a motorhome is that you only have to walk to the carpark – and you are home!
