Can you buy LPG in Morocco for your motorhome?
The answer is YES.
To our knowledge you can’t refill an overseas-LPG or underslung LPG tank in Morocco; BUT you CAN buy LPG in Morocco for your motorhome.
So firstly, we’re talking about ‘gas’ and ‘LPG’ to buy in Morocco. What sort of gas do we mean?
In both urban and rural settings in Morocco, LPG and/or gas is used as the main method for heating, cooking and often lighting as well.
We are talking about the same thing; the gas you use in your motorhome to COOK or HEAT inside your van. We are not talking about the kind of gas or LPG to propel your vehicle or essentially to make your vehicle MOVE.
This is about gas and LPG to use for cooking, heating, eating, boiling and your fridge – all the best bits of camping and travelling by motorhome in Morocco!
What kind of gas is available in Morocco?
LPG (Liquid Propane GAS) or otherwise known in parts of Europe as GPL is available in Morocco. (Morocco has only recently entered the international Natural Liquefied Gas (LNG) market).
- LPG and GPL is in widespread use in Morocco for cooking and heating.
The big question – how to get LPG in Morocco for your motorhome. What are the options?
After travelling in Morocco in our motorhome using LPG for cooking and heating we have realized (with relief) that it isn’t actually such a big deal as the forums prepare you for!
Locals are very helpful and knowledgeable about sourcing and using LPG in Morocco (after all, it is the main source for cooking and heating in almost every home and commercial setting).
Ultimately there are several options for sourcing and fitting LPG in Morocco for your motorhome (including alternatives).
1. Bring enough gas with you to Morocco
This is an easy and straightforward option and likely will cause the least amount of headache. Bring a large bottle of LPG with you from Europe.
If you have dates and know how long you will be in Morocco for this is a simple option.
However, this is only going to work best for you if you are travelling to Morocco for a short time. And/or if you have a sizeable gas bottle that will last your trip.
2. Install a refillable gas bottle system
These are popular and common in Europe and a great way of supplying gas for cooking and heating your motorhome… in Europe.
However, the challenge here is that you cannot refill your European refillable gas bottle system in Morocco.
This is the source of confusion on social media forums.
The question of refilling LPG in Morocco vs. the question of sourcing LPG in Morocco.
- Whereas in Europe you can pull up to a service station and attach your LPG fittings and refill your onboard gas bottle. In Morocco service stations cannot refill a gas bottle from Europe.
Well, there is the chance someone can sling up your gas bottle and hang it upside down from a tree and drip-feed your refillable system.
Which technically counts as refilling, right? (Note – not actually recommending this way!).
3. Don’t cook with gas
There is the other option to travel with electric cooking items (slow cooker, electric frying pan, toaster etc.) and in theory you could just plug in to power at a campground and cook without gas.
However, this might be a more realistic option to consider in Europe where all campgrounds actually do offer the option to plug in to AC…
4. Buy a Moroccan gas bottle and change your regulator
As you travel through Morocco by motorhome its not uncommon to see a van parked up with a gas bottle out the door.
What this means is that they have purchased a local gas bottle in Morocco but it doesn’t fit where their European bottle sits or it has a different regulator and fittings.
Don’t despair though. This is a workable solution.
We have seen campervans change their regulator and run a pipe outside their door to fit a Moroccan gas bottle. (Also a pretty easy solution).
5. Buy a gas bottle in Morocco for your motorhome
This is the simplest answer for the question of how to get LPG in Morocco for your motorhome.
A bit like above but this involves buying one that connects to your fittings and fits inside your vehicle. (No makeshift or outside connector pipe required).
And so we’re going to focus on explaining how to do this as the easiest solution to your LPG gas challenge for Morocco…
If you have space in your motorhome for a second LPG gas bottle you are in luck.
- Tip: Yes! It is possible to buy LPG in Morocco for your motorhome.
So where can you buy gas in Morocco for your motorhome?
Actually, gas bottles are on display for sale all over Morocco.
As soon as we arrived at the port in Tangier and drove out onto the highway, we could see gas bottles for sale. The first campground we stopped at in Asilah had gas bottles for sale.
So do not worry – gas bottles are available for purchase in every town you go in Morocco.
However they do range in size, shape and condition (and the range of condition does vary a lot more than your average options for LPG in Europe).
Although we immediately saw LPG for sale and gas bottles on display outside the first campsite we arrived at; we waited until we got a bit further down the coast.
We purchased a gas bottle somewhere between Mohammedia and Casablanca at a fairly large highway-type shop.
The men in the roadside shop we stopped at were great and all (four of them) came out to help install the gas bottle to our motorhome. (Albeit it actually only need attaching to the gas hose in the same way as any gas bottle; but their enthusiasm was confidence-boosting!).
Overall it was a friendly, cost-efficient and straightforward experience.
So how much does it cost for a bottle of LPG in Morocco?
Prices for bottles of LPG in Morocco for your motorhome seem to be fairly standardised across the country.
With a little room for flexibility in different regions and larger/smaller shops we found the cost of LPG in Morocco as follows…
- Small 3kg: 70 MAD
- Medium 6kg: 100 MAD
- Large 11kg: 140 MAD
Can you swap LPG bottles in Morocco? And how much does it cost?
It is possible – and easy – to swap Moroccan gas bottles in Morocco (for Moroccan bottles). But they will only accept a swap of the same colour bottle.
- Tip: You can only swap a Moroccan gas bottle for a Moroccan gas bottle of the same colour.
In Morocco different colour gas bottles are actually from different cities and regions of the country.
- Small 3kg: 15 MAD
- Medium 6kg: 30 MAD
- Large 11kg: 45 MAD

People all over Morocco use gas to cook with! All restaurants and homes are fitted with some kind of LPG system for cooking. Gas bottles are everywhere.
So, there are still a couple of other options if buying a large LPG gas bottle in Morocco doesn’t fit or work for your motorhome.
Large department stores like Decathlon stock standard cooking supplies for camping and outdoors. These might be single or double burner gas stoves that use fairly standard small gas canisters.
- Tip: A single burner cooker costs around 30 EUR and canisters can be purchased at the same time.
In many markets and souqs (and actually roadside shops and kiosks) you will see charcoal burners, gas ring hobs, and small portable electric cooking stoves.
There are all kinds of fittings available in these small hardware shops and stands so you have plenty of options.

I think the question people are trying to ask is if there are any lpg pumps in Morocco where they can refill underslung tanks? You do not seem to clearly answer this!!!
I think we are all aware that people cook on gas from bottles, we also know bottles and gas vary across Europe i.e. Flogas, Calor gas, butane or propane.
Very few people will be running their motorhome engine on lpg but they may have an underslung tank for cooking and heating and need to know if they can refill.
