Choosing a Morocco motorhome itinerary
Welcome to Morocco!
Morocco by motorhome is one of the coolest van adventures we’ve shared to date.
It is so contrastingly different to vanlife in Europe. But the chance to experience a whole new culture, the varied and beautiful changing landscape of the country from north to south and the affordable fuel, food and parking make Morocco a motorhomers paradise.
The next question is about how long you plan to travel in Morocco by motorhome.

2 – 4 weeks – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary
With 2 – 4 weeks in Morocco you can cover the famous imperial cities of Fes, Marrakech and Meknes.
Plus you have time to go all the way to the incredible Moroccan Sahara or south to the Atlantic coast beaches.

- Asilah
- Rabat
- Mohammedia
- Casablanca
- Marrakech
- Ouarzazate
- Merzouga (Sahara)
- Fes
- Chefchaouen
- Tetouan
- Tangier-Med (Port)
From Casablanca you can choose whether to go south along the coast towards Essaouira. Or you can start the inland journey to Marrakech and Moroccan Sahara.

6 – 8 weeks – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary
With 6 – 8 weeks in Morocco by motorhome you can cover a lot!
You have time to hug the coast on the way south and can go all the way towards Sidi Ifni, south of Agadir and Taghazout.
If you would rather the inland experience you could focus on the inland towns of the High Atlas Mountains and visit Tiznit, Taroudant and Tafraoute. Or both!
- Tangier-Med (Port)
- Asilah
- Rabat
- Mohammedia
- Casablanca
- El Jadida
- Safi

With this itinerary you can pretty much cover everywhere you want to see in Morocco!
You have time with 3-months in Morocco to choose whether to see the Moroccan Sahara at Zagora and M’Hamid or in Merzouga. Or both!
Heading further south to Western Sahara is also an option.
We drove all the way south and spent time in Dakhla before crossing the border to Mauritania.
This option for 3-months of Morocco motorhome travel allows time to cross the border into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. That is helpful if you need to extend your Schengen time by even a couple of days.
- Read how to cross the border from Morocco to Ceuta (Spain).

Motorhome campsites in Morocco
The main overnight parking options for motorhomes in Morocco consists of two types:
- Campsites (paid parking with power and motorhome services)
- Guarded parking (a parking area, space or carpark managed by a guard)
Wild camping is – in theory – tolerated in Morocco. Although it is always advisable to do so without trespassing and away from the main cities and towns.
- Read more about campsites in Morocco.
Destinations for travel by motorhome in Morocco
The following is details about some of the major destinations that are perfect for a Morocco motorhome road trip.
See the main things to do in each place plus tips for where to stay.
ASILAH – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary
Hands down, we reckon the best route for a first time Morocco motorhome itinerary is to start from the port of Tangier Med and drive directly to Asilah.
Asilah is a fortified port city on the north Atlantic coast.
It is a small and picturesque town with a couple of basic campsites in walking distance to the Medina and the beach.
The small size and proximity to Tangier Med makes this the best choice for a first destination to stay in your motorhome after arriving.
- Read about the 15 best things to do in Asilah.
Things to do in Asilah
Most of the best things to do in Asilah are located inside the historic medina and size-wise, Asilah can be explored on foot in a day.
- Asilah Medina: Mohammed Ben Abdellah Street is the main shopping street selling handicrafts, beautifully coloured Moroccan carpets, postcards and souvenirs.
- Asilah Ramparts: The southwestern bastion (Caraquia viewpoint) is the best spot for views.
- Thursday Souk: Ahfir Souk is a street market located next to the Bab Homar wall. The souk is open every day but on Thursday the market is even bigger.
- Church of St Bartolome: A colonial church built by the Spanish Franciscans in 1925. One of the very few churches in Morocco allowed to ring the bells for Sunday Mass.

Where to stay in Asilah, Morocco with your motorhome
There are two main campsites for motorhomes in Asilah, Morocco. And the good news is that they are literally right next door to each other.
It is a great first stopping point after arriving by ferry from Spain to Morocco with your van.
Sometimes people suggest to go the other direction towards Chefchaouen. But we reckon that is best saved for last.
The campsites in Chefchaouen are not as close to the city. So you will likely end up in a carpark which isn’t the best way to spend a first night in Morocco.
We stayed at Camping Echrigui in Asilah. The friendly owner, Nawfal and his family will look after you well.
ASILAH: Camping Echrigui
- Location: Avenue Moulay Hassan Ben Mahdi, Asilah
- Type: Campsite
- Park4Night: #30379
- Cost: CC 30Dh + 20Dh per adult + 8Dh per child
- Facilities: Basic toilets, showers, fresh water, grey and black waste
About: A great first start in Morocco! Friendly family-run campsite with basic facilities but everything you need for your motorhome.
The location is great with just a 10 minute walk to the medina and across the road from the beach. There is a mini-market and restaurants just outside the gate.
Ask Nawfal in reception about a tagine for dinner – his Mums cooking is divine and a great first taste of Moroccan cuisine!
RABAT – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary
The capital city of Rabat is often overlooked as a destination for travel to Morocco.
It is a modern city today but like it’s neighbours it boasts a rich history with another lively Moroccan medina.
- Read our guide for things to do in Rabat.
Things to do in Rabat
Most of the things to do in Rabat are within walking distance of the historic medina.
There is a guarded carpark just outside the entrance to the Rabat medina.
- Rabat Medina: While much of Rabat is extremely modern, the medina still has reminders of a historic and different kind of life.
- City of Sale: Salé is just across the Bou Regreg River from Rabat and has a fascinating history that is deeply linked to a past with dreaded pirating famed since the 1600’s.
- Visit Chellah: Overlooking the lush Bou Regreg River on the Rabat city side is Chellah, a picturesque fort that dates back to the Phoenician times in the third century B.C.

MOHAMMEDIA – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary
The small(ish) city of Mohammedia is the next best stop south from Rabat. There isn’t the same old city vibes as the imperial cities of Morocco.
But Mohammedia has a fabulous campsite right next to the beach that is owned by one of the friendliest families in Morocco.
From the campsite it is easy to get a taxi to the Mohammedia market. Or you can even take a taxi to Casablanca for a day trip instead of driving in the city traffic.
- Read more about things to do in Mohammedia and how to visit the Souk.

Motorhome parking in Mohammedia, Morocco
We always stay at the friendly campsite L’Ocean Bleu and highly recommend this as a stop on your Morocco motorhome itinerary.
MOHAMMEDIA: L’Ocean Bleu
- Location: El Mansouria, Mohammedia
- Type: Campsite
- Park4Night: #12982
- Cost: 80 MAD / 2 pers

About: A great place to stay in Morocco. By the sea with ideal location for visiting Mohammedia and Casablanca.

CASABLANCA – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary
Casablanca is the next major city heading south on the Atlantic coast.
It is a port city and commercial hub and the largest city in the country.
- Read about things to do in Casablanca.
Things to do in Casablanca, Morocco
Casablanca is not as easy to navigate on foot. Or in the traffic! It has the busiest traffic-congestion in Morocco.
But it is a great destination on your Morocco motorhome itinerary to stop at the grand Hassan II Mosque.
- Hassan II Mosque: No trip to Casablanca is complete without visiting the spectacular Hassan II Mosque. This is the only mosque in Morocco open to non-Muslims.
- Morocco Mall: Located at the end of La Corniche area is the biggest shopping mall on the African continent.
- Old Medina: The old medina of Casablanca is a vibrant place to wander (and drink tea and eat fresh, hot M’smen).

Motorhome parking in Casablanca, Morocco
There is a large overnight motorhome parking near Morocco Mall in Casablanca.
Or the best daytime parking is in a guarded carpark outside Hassan II Mosque.

MARRAKECH – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary
Morocco’s most well-known city is a sensory experience of vibrant colours, flavours, smells, sounds and unique sights.
- Read our detailed guide and things to do in Marrakech.
Things to do in Marrakech
It’s world-famous for the maze of markets and shopping in old city medina but there are plenty more things to do in Marrakech.
- Jamaa el Fnaa: The main square of the Marrakech medina is the literally-bustling heart and hub of the city and an experience of culture, chaos and shopping like nowhere else!
- Try a Moroccan hammam: This is a must-do during your travels in Morocco. A hammam is a public bathhouse and the experience really is one of the highlights (and out-of-comfort-zone adventures) of the culture.
- Jardin Marjorelle: Visit the famous gardens and vibrant blue house once owned and restored by Yves St Laurent. A truly tropical desert oasis in the midst of the busy city.

Motorhome parking in Marrakech, Morocco
There are a few campsites on the outskirts of Marrakech with motorhome parking and services.
The best place to park with a motorhome close to all the things to do in Marrakech (walking distance) is in the guarded carpark near Koutoubia Mosque.
Parking Et Lavage La Koutoubia
- Location: Avenue Hommane Al Fatouaki
- Type: Paying Motorhome Area
- Park4Night: #29651
- Cost: 150 MAD 24hr
- Facilities: Toilets, Rubbish.
About: A private guarded parking lot in the heart of Marrakech. Campers are parked at the end of the car parking area with 24-hour security.
There are basic (very) toilets in the carpark. But the best thing about it is the proximity to all the things to do in Marrakech.

ESSAOUIRA – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary
Essaouira is a port city on the Atlantic coast. Just a walk in the port vicinity feels like more than a world away from Europe!
The trade winds make Essaouira popular for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. Though it isn’t as overcrowded as Marrakech or Fes.
It is one of the most underrated destinations for travel to Morocco and a great space for wandering without quite the overwhelm of the main city stops.
- Read more about things to do in Essaouira.
Things to do in Essaouira
- Essaouira Medina: The labyrinth of alleyways in the old city are an assault on the senses (in a good way) with colourful souvenirs, handicrafts, Moroccan rugs and shoes.
- Surfing: Trade winds make Essaouira a fantastic alternative for a Morocco vacation away from the big touristy cities. There are plenty of surf shops, windsurfing and surfing schools that are great for beginners.
- Essaouira Port: Essaouira was the main fishing port for Morocco in the 1900’s and today fishing boats line the harbour where each day they sell their catch.

Motorhome parking in Essaouira, Morocco
There is daytime motorhome parking in the car park right outside the medina walls. Otherwise you can park in the large Carrefour carpark at the entrance to town (during the day).
For overnight we usually stay in Sidi Kaouki at the beach.

- Cost: 20Dh daytime parking / no longer available overnight

There are some small cafes and mini-markets in the little village of Sidi Kaouki.

OUNAGHA: Camping Oliviers
- Location: Centre Ounagha (Ounara), Province d’Essaouira

AGADIR – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary
Agadir is a city on Morocco’s southern Atlantic coastline connecting to the foothills of the Anti-Atlas Mountains.
The coastal city is somewhat of a tourist resort that is popular with European travellers and Moroccans.
It is especially busy in the European winter with travellers escaping the cold! In the summer, it is busy with Moroccans travelling to the coast from the inland – hot – desert regions.
The nearby beaches of Taghazout and Tamraght are the best place to head with a motorhome.
There are several large campsites and a choice of guarded parking areas.
- Read more about things to do in Agadir, Taghazout and Tamraght.
Things to do in Agadir
Much of the most popular things to do in Agadir are technically in the neighbouring beach towns of Taghazout and Tamraght.
Though the impressive Souk El Had is the largest in the country.

Motorhome parking in Agadir, Taghazout and Tamraght, Morocco
There are several large campsites for with motorhome services in Agadir region. Though they are actually located on the coast near Taghazout and Tamraght.
We tried the campsite once and it was full. So we’ve returned each time to Agadir to stay at the guarded parking options in Taghazout and Tamraght.
TAGAZHOUT: Camping Terre d’Ocean
