Choosing The Perfect Morocco Motorhome Itinerary For A First Trip.

Consider a Morocco motorhome adventure?  Welcome to vanlife in North Africa!

Morocco is an incredible destination for van travel.  But one of the first questions in planning your Morocco motorhome road trip is about where to go and what to visit with your time.

We’re just wrapping up an epic eight months in Morocco by motorhome, so we have a lot to share for your trip.

We have put together the perfect Morocco motorhome itinerary for your first trip with options from 2 – 6 weeks and up to 90 days in Morocco.

Here is everything you need to know for a fantastic road trip including what to see, where to stay, which direction to travel in and the best things to do in each destination.

Getting to Morocco

The chances are that if you are planning a Morocco motorhome adventure you will arrive at one of the main ports in the north of the country.

There are several options for ferry routes between Spain and Morocco with a vehicle (including one that technically travels from Spain to Spain!).

Ports of departure in Spain

Ports of arrival in Morocco (and Spain)

The most common route of arrival in Morocco is on the vehicle ferry from Algeciras, Spain to Tangier Med, Morocco

A first glimpse of Morocco arriving on the ferry from Spain.

Do I need a visa for travel to Morocco?

Most people can get a visa on arrival to Morocco for up to 90 days.  Which also makes it an ideal way to get out of Schengen for the winter months.

The following are several options for a Morocco motorhome itinerary from 2 – 6 weeks and up to 3 months in Morocco.

Choosing a Morocco motorhome itinerary

Welcome to Morocco!

Morocco by motorhome is one of the coolest van adventures we’ve shared to date.

It is so contrastingly different to vanlife in Europe.  But the chance to experience a whole new culture, the varied and beautiful changing landscape of the country from north to south and the affordable fuel, food and parking make Morocco a motorhomers paradise.

The next question is about how long you plan to travel in Morocco by motorhome.

Driving in Morocco with such challenges as traffic en-route to the Moroccan Sahara…

2 – 4 weeks – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary

With 2 – 4 weeks in Morocco you can cover the famous imperial cities of Fes, Marrakech and Meknes.

Plus you have time to go all the way to the incredible Moroccan Sahara or south to the Atlantic coast beaches.

From Casablanca you can choose whether to go south along the coast towards Essaouira.  Or you can start the inland journey to Marrakech and Moroccan Sahara.

The iconic and historic tanneries of Fes.

6 – 8 weeks – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary

With 6 – 8 weeks in Morocco by motorhome you can cover a lot!

You have time to hug the coast on the way south and can go all the way towards Sidi Ifni, south of Agadir and Taghazout.

If you would rather the inland experience you could focus on the inland towns of the High Atlas Mountains and visit Tiznit, Taroudant and Tafraoute.  Or both!

Tetouan and the beach of Martil is a good stop on the way back towards the port of Tangier Med after Chefchaouen

The old city of Rabat.

3-month Morocco Motorhome Itinerary

With 3-months to spare on your Morocco motorhome itinerary you really can see a huge portion of the country!

With this itinerary you can pretty much cover everywhere you want to see in Morocco!

You have time with 3-months in Morocco to choose whether to see the Moroccan Sahara at Zagora and M’Hamid or in Merzouga.  Or both!

Heading further south to Western Sahara is also an option.

We drove all the way south and spent time in Dakhla before crossing the border to Mauritania.

This option for 3-months of Morocco motorhome travel allows time to cross the border into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. That is helpful if you need to extend your Schengen time by even a couple of days.

Fancy visiting a camel market in Morocco?

Motorhome campsites in Morocco

The main overnight parking options for motorhomes in Morocco consists of two types:

Wild camping is – in theory – tolerated in Morocco.  Although it is always advisable to do so without trespassing and away from the main cities and towns.

Destinations for travel by motorhome in Morocco

The following is details about some of the major destinations that are perfect for a Morocco motorhome road trip.

See the main things to do in each place plus tips for where to stay.

ASILAH – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary

Hands down, we reckon the best route for a first time Morocco motorhome itinerary is to start from the port of Tangier Med and drive directly to Asilah.

Asilah is a fortified port city on the north Atlantic coast.

It is a small and picturesque town with a couple of basic campsites in walking distance to the Medina and the beach.

The small size and proximity to Tangier Med makes this the best choice for a first destination to stay in your motorhome after arriving.

Things to do in Asilah

Most of the best things to do in Asilah are located inside the historic medina and size-wise, Asilah can be explored on foot in a day.

The iconic white and blues of Asilah, Morocco.

Where to stay in Asilah, Morocco with your motorhome

There are two main campsites for motorhomes in Asilah, Morocco.  And the good news is that they are literally right next door to each other.

It is a great first stopping point after arriving by ferry from Spain to Morocco with your van.

Sometimes people suggest to go the other direction towards Chefchaouen.  But we reckon that is best saved for last.

The campsites in Chefchaouen are not as close to the city.  So you will likely end up in a carpark which isn’t the best way to spend a first night in Morocco.

We stayed at Camping Echrigui in Asilah.  The friendly owner, Nawfal and his family will look after you well.

ASILAH: Camping Echrigui

About: A great first start in Morocco! Friendly family-run campsite with basic facilities but everything you need for your motorhome.

The location is great with just a 10 minute walk to the medina and across the road from the beach.  There is a mini-market and restaurants just outside the gate.

Ask Nawfal in reception about a tagine for dinner – his Mums cooking is divine and a great first taste of Moroccan cuisine!

RABAT – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary

The capital city of Rabat is often overlooked as a destination for travel to Morocco.

It is a modern city today but like it’s neighbours it boasts a rich history with another lively Moroccan medina.

Things to do in Rabat

Most of the things to do in Rabat are within walking distance of the historic medina.

There is a guarded carpark just outside the entrance to the Rabat medina.

The incredible Mausoleum of Mohammed V at Hassan Tower.

MOHAMMEDIA – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary

The small(ish) city of Mohammedia is the next best stop south from Rabat.  There isn’t the same old city vibes as the imperial cities of Morocco.

But Mohammedia has a fabulous campsite right next to the beach that is owned by one of the friendliest families in Morocco.

From the campsite it is easy to get a taxi to the Mohammedia market.  Or you can even take a taxi to Casablanca for a day trip instead of driving in the city traffic.

Souk Joutia is all the Moroccan souk vibes without the stress.

Motorhome parking in Mohammedia, Morocco

We always stay at the friendly campsite L’Ocean Bleu and highly recommend this as a stop on your Morocco motorhome itinerary.

MOHAMMEDIA: L’Ocean Bleu

CASABLANCA – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary

Casablanca is the next major city heading south on the Atlantic coast.

It is a port city and commercial hub and the largest city in the country.

Things to do in Casablanca, Morocco

Casablanca is not as easy to navigate on foot.  Or in the traffic!  It has the busiest traffic-congestion in Morocco.

But it is a great destination on your Morocco motorhome itinerary to stop at the grand Hassan II Mosque.

Friendly – and a little fishy – in the old Medina of Casablanca.

Motorhome parking in Casablanca, Morocco

There is a large overnight motorhome parking near Morocco Mall in Casablanca.

Or the best daytime parking is in a guarded carpark outside Hassan II Mosque.

Boulevard de l’Ocean Atlantique

About: Mixed parking on a flat gravelled carpark monitored day and night.  Basic toilets and small kiosk shop open sporadically in the evenings.

There is the possibility (sometimes) of discharging grey and black water and refilling fresh water.

We have stayed here many times in Casablanca.  It is a safe and ideal parking lot close to Morocco Mall and the Corniche and to visit the Hassan II Mosque.

Boulevard Moulay Youssef by Hassan II Mosque

About: Basic guarded parking but friendly guardians and a safe spot to stay overnight and visit Hassan II Mosque.

Close to the beautiful corniche and in walking distance to the medina.

MARRAKECH – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary

Morocco’s most well-known city is a sensory experience of vibrant colours, flavours, smells, sounds and unique sights.

Things to do in Marrakech

It’s world-famous for the maze of markets and shopping in old city medina but there are plenty more things to do in Marrakech.

Driving in the inner city can be busy during rush hour (but it is not as busy as Casablanca traffic!).

Motorhome parking in Marrakech, Morocco

There are a few campsites on the outskirts of Marrakech with motorhome parking and services.

The best place to park with a motorhome close to all the things to do in Marrakech (walking distance) is in the guarded carpark near Koutoubia Mosque.

 Parking Et Lavage La Koutoubia

About: A private guarded parking lot in the heart of Marrakech. Campers are parked at the end of the car parking area with 24-hour security.

There are basic (very) toilets in the carpark.  But the best thing about it is the proximity to all the things to do in Marrakech.

Motorhome parking within walking distance to the Medina.

ESSAOUIRA – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary

Essaouira is a port city on the Atlantic coast.  Just a walk in the port vicinity feels like more than a world away from Europe!

The trade winds make Essaouira popular for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing.  Though it isn’t as overcrowded as Marrakech or Fes.

It is one of the most underrated destinations for travel to Morocco and a great space for wandering without quite the overwhelm of the main city stops.

Things to do in Essaouira

Welcome to Essaouira and Morocco by the way.

Motorhome parking in Essaouira, Morocco

There is daytime motorhome parking in the car park right outside the medina walls.  Otherwise you can park in the large Carrefour carpark at the entrance to town (during the day).

For overnight we usually stay in Sidi Kaouki at the beach.

ESSAOUIRA: Parking Bab Marrakech

About: Large guarded carpark just outside the gate to the Medina. Handy for a daytime visit to Essaouira.

SIDI KAOUKI: Paradis Aicha Sidi Kaouki

About: ‘Paradise’ is rather euphemistic for the campsite but we stay here each time we are in Essaouira.  The beach is directly across the road.

Facilities are basic but the charge is only 30Dh per night and there is water to refill your motorhome and place to empty your cassette.

There are some small cafes and mini-markets in the little village of Sidi Kaouki.

OUNAGHA: Camping Oliviers

About: Friendly and local, family-run campsite 15km from Essaouira.  Very clean toilets and hot showers. Washing machine for 40Dh.

The campsite is located in the small village of Ounagha.  It’s easy to leave your van and take the bus or shared taxi to Essaouira for the day for only 10Dh per person.

Off to explore from the campsite at Sidi Kaouki.

AGADIR – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary

Agadir is a city on Morocco’s southern Atlantic coastline connecting to the foothills of the Anti-Atlas Mountains.

The coastal city is somewhat of a tourist resort that is popular with European travellers and Moroccans.

It is especially busy in the European winter with travellers escaping the cold!  In the summer, it is busy with Moroccans travelling to the coast from the inland – hot – desert regions.

The nearby beaches of Taghazout and Tamraght are the best place to head with a motorhome.

There are several large campsites and a choice of guarded parking areas.

Things to do in Agadir

Much of the most popular things to do in Agadir are technically in the neighbouring beach towns of Taghazout and Tamraght.

Though the impressive Souk El Had is the largest in the country.

Sunset views from our motorhome carpark up above the village of Taghazout.

Motorhome parking in Agadir, Taghazout and Tamraght, Morocco

There are several large campsites for with motorhome services in Agadir region.  Though they are actually located on the coast near Taghazout and Tamraght.

We tried the campsite once and it was full.  So we’ve returned each time to Agadir to stay at the guarded parking options in Taghazout and Tamraght.

TAGAZHOUT: Camping Terre d’Ocean

About: Washing machine (50Dh), convenience store plus restaurant (serves wine/beer) onsite.

Note there is not much space left to park during the winter months as many (retirees) motorhomes spend months parked here.

Horses and camels (of course) at Taghazout Beach near Agadir.

TAMRAGHT: Camping Atlantic Imourane

About: A medium sized campsite on the Tamraght main stretch of road.

However this place also gets booked out literally weeks in advance!

SIDI IFNI – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary

Sidi Ifni is a city on the Atlantic coast and one of the last places in Morocco to gain independence from Spanish rule.

From the beachfront campsites at the base of the hill it is a nice walk up into the town.

This is a friendly, small town on route to Moroccan Sahara.

It is also an ideal stopover for any vehicle maintenance.

The weekly market in Tafraoute is a great market experience.

We stayed at Camping Sindibad close to town – and with good, hot showers.

Camping Sindibad

About: Central, friendly and quiet campsite. Lots of palm trees, own restaurant and terrace with stunning views.

Toilets, hot showers, electrical connection, washing machine.

The uncanny lush green of the date palm oases in Zagora. A contrast much?

MERZOUGA – Morocco Motorhome Itinerary

For travellers who have the time, a journey to Merzouga offers the ultimate experience of the Moroccan desert.

Merzouga is a desert town located near the Algerian border in south-eastern Morocco (approximately a 10 hour trip by bus or car from Marrakech).

If you have ever seen postcards or pictures of the bright orange towering sand dunes of the Sahara desert the chances are that is Merzouga.

Things to do in Merzouga

Although the journey may seem long to get there it is one of the most magical places to visit in Morocco.

Motorhome parking in Merzouga, Morocco
